Matters of Protocol

President Major Sandor X. Mayuga, United States Air Force Reserve

Protocols DO Matter

For the benefit of all, and especially newer members, we periodically publish reminders of the BUSC's mess protocol, customs and etiquette. If there are any questions about BUSC mess protocol, please contact the president in advance of any mess night. To avoid embarrassment, members should advise guests of the dress requirement and all other BUSC mess protocol, customs and etiquette. Here are this month's reminders:

  • Reserving Seating: Members and guests may not reserve places at tables by any means.
  • Passing the Port Decanter: When the wait staff delivers the port decanter at the end of each table, each diner will fill his or her own glass and then pass it to the person to his or her left, ensuring that the decanter does not touch the table. Port may not be drunk until after the Loyal Toasts are proposed. Abstainers may drink the Loyal Toasts in water, in which case the abstainer simply passes the port to his or her left.
  • Gentlemen's Dress: (1) Military (federal only; excludes state defense forces such as state militias) mess dress worn in accordance with the service's regulations; or (2) Tuxedo (Black dinner jacket/black trousers all year or White dinner jacket/black trousers permitted from April through September) with black bow tie and cummerbund (or BUSC cummerbund), and white shirt; or (3) Kilt with black bow tie. Members may wear (i) miniature military service medals and military-issued badges and awards to which they are entitled, and (ii) decorations awarded by The Crown. Where the military service medal, badge or award is not available as a miniature, wear will be governed by the appropriate military service dress regulation.
  • Ladies Dress: (1) Military (federal only; excludes state defense forces such as state militias) mess dress worn in accordance with the service's regulations; or (2) Appropriate formal evening attire (long dress or gown).
  • Call to Order: After the mess is called to order for the seating of the head table, please remain silent until after the president's welcome, the Grace and the conclusion of the president's opening remarks.
