President's Remarks
for the
2019 Annual Vice Presidents Night
Captain Stuart R. Bird-Wilson, TD

The JROTC dinner was the usual high point of our Mess Nights with some twenty-one Cadets, eight Officers, Instructors and their wives as our Guests to honor the top three schools in the Annual Drill Competition. We have done this now for 74th years.  James Monroe High School won first place for the 22nd time; Manual Arts High School came in second and Van Nuys High School was a third placed re-entry into the leading pack. All looked very smart in their uniforms decked with medals. Basil Johnson, Esq., our JROTC Coordinator presented BUSC streamers to the senior Cadet officers of each team. They in turn gave a short appreciation to the Club and described briefly what the program meant to them. The All City Cadet Colonel then capped off Cadet participation. Each speaker gave poised and timely remarks.

An impressive list of members funded our Guests’ meals. I thank the generous contributors for helping the Club encourage these sharp young Cadets in serious endeavors to better themselves and to become good leaders in the future of this country.

Our speaker Vicki Fox had a family emergency. Col Tom Mahan and CAPT Rob Meyer teamed up to regale us with a short overview of the famous Lockheed Skunk Works. They presented the information stressing the “STEM” concept to help Cadets better understand the multitude of opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Skunk Works continues to develop amazing special aircraft to keep the USAF the premier air force it is.

He also serves as the Hospital Epidemiologist and Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.  His major areas of research interest are emerging infectious disease epidemiology, Ebola virus disease, infection control, pandemic response preparation, medical education in low-resource settings, and tropical medicine.  Dr. Smit will regale us with a rattling good yarn about fighting alongside his British colleagues to control a major EBOLA virus outbreak in Sierra Leone. Welcome Dr Michael Smit to Vice Presidents Night.
